A Very Busy December!

Since it has been such a long time from our last post until now we should give everyone an update on how things are going at the farm.  We have been busy getting the farm ready for winter and having fun for the holidays as well. All the horses are doing great on the farm and growing nicely!

First off we have four wonderful foals due for the spring with the breeding of: Lalique(Urban Cowgirl) x Cunningham, Wynona x Dakota VDL, Olivia x Ampere, and Ca Ching S x Calito I.  We do not know the sex of these foals for sure so it will be a nice surprise in the spring!  These foals should all be fabulous additions to the offspring of First Flight Farm and we are very excited for March to arrive!

Secondly, we have been starting our late 2 year olds under saddle this month!  It has been going incredibly well.

Oliana FFF (Furstenball x Olivia) was our first filly and she took to riding like it was nothing!  We have posted a few pictures and videos on our Facebook page.

Guinevere FFF is a lovely Cunningham filly out of Xanadu that was just ridden for the first time Wednesday, December 7th and she did really well also!

Dionysus FFF(Dante Weltino x Tirana) our 2-year-old colt was the last to be ridden for the first time and as expected he did really well.

We are so happy that our young horses have such good minds and are so calm! That might not always be the case when we start progressing through their training more but its what we hope for!

The lovely 3 year olds we have in Training here on the Farm are Izarra (Ampere x Preference ISF),  and Stephano (French Kiss x Saraya).  These wonderful young horses are doing great under saddle and we will be creating some more videos after the holidays to showcase their talents!

Izarra is a wonderful dressage prospect and is perfect for an intermediate to advanced rider as she can be a little more nervous at times, but she is a wonderful mover with uphill gaits and is nicely balanced!

And last but not least is Stephano a cute smaller gelding that would be great for any rider young or old!  He is very easy to handle and sweet as can be!  These three horses are working well under saddle and progressing nicely through their training.  Contact for more information on any of them!

Finally our three little (but not so little) weanlings Fyodor, Quinton, and Isadora are doing great out in their field spending time just being horses and growing up a little.  They are looking great and super fluffy for the winter!

Well that is all for now and we hope to keep posting updates for everyone! If you have any questions about foals or any of our sale horses please feel free to contact us here at the farm.  We would love to hear from you!  Happy Holidays!

What a successful first year for our Holsteiners!

I was totally thrilled to get an email today telling me my Holsteiner mare Wynona was the Top Scoring Holsteiner Mare for 2013! She will be featured on the cover of the upcoming issue of the Holsteiner Magazine!

Wynona, (Cacique - Calvadur), is currently in foal to Corralejo Del Rio (Cathalido - LaCoste). She is expecting a filly and is due to foal April 20.

This news came not long after I learned my 2013 Holsteiner filly, FFF Querida by Cunningham, out of my Premium Brandenburg mare Quinoa, by Quaterback finished as #3 Top Foal for 2013!

We are very excited about the results as 2013 was just our first year of breeding Holsteiners! Thank you Joshua Tabor for convincing me to branch out and add another breed here at the farm. Apparently it was a good decision!

FFF Querida

Now this is one laid back horse!

Wynston is really learning to take his role as a show horse in stride these days!  Here he is being braided for a recent Houston Dressage Society show in Bryan, TX.  At over 17 H tall, it can be a challenge to reach up to braid him, so he was quite willing to accommodate the braider by allowing her to do his braids while he took a nap.  What a nice guy!
I love this time of year!

Let the 2013 Show Season begin!!
We are pretty busy here on the farm with the breeding and foaling out of our own plus numerous client mares, but that has not stopped our show horses from representing us admirably in both the dressage and jumper show rings around Texas.

Our new Holsteiner jumper mare Zana Moon with Joshua Tabor training and showing her, has been to several shows already in Waco and Houston.  We love to watch the videos of their performances.  Zana Moon is such a talented young mare, we expect many more great performances from her in the future!

Meanwhile, our gorgeous and talented Wynton boys, Wynston and Wellington will be representing First Flight Farm in the dressage arena, being trained and shown by Eva Oldenbroek-Tabor.  Wynston scored 7.36% earning his first win of the season in the Young Horse 4/5/6 y/o Qualifier class at the Alamo Dressage Association Show at the San Antonio Rose Palace on April 7.
We have been busy!!

February 21, 2013

Donnella (Zonik x V.Pr.St. Donnabelle, by Donnerhall) made her appearance March 21, 2013 just one day before her expected due date.  She is a lovely filly, just as we expected her to be.

February 23, 2013

Just two days and a few sleepless nights later, Donnabelle's daughter by Sarkozy, Sp.Pr.Ca. Saraya, finally decided to present us with her long-awaited colt by French Kiss.  He arrived at 7:30 PM on Day 361, or 21 days past her projected due date. Stephano is delightful, not to mention a gorgeous black like both of his parents.  As he is a colt, he will be for sale, but I do not expect this one will last long!

April 6, 2013

Oneida, our Furstenball filly out of our lovely V.Pr.St. Olivia (Don Kennedy - Argentinus) delighted us with her birth at the relatively civilized hour of 10:54 PM.  We did not know whether Olivia was having a colt or a filly as the fetus was less than cooperative during our attempt at fetal sexing.  I could not have special ordered a nicer foal!  Just like her previous foals Wynston (by Wynton) and Oriana (by EH Connery) Olivia has stamped this new filly with her excellent disposition and personality.

Our final FFF foal of the season, Lalique x Cunningham, is not due until May 2, so perhaps we can get a few nights of sleep in between breedings before then.  We certainly could all use that!  We do not know the sex of this foal either, so we are in for another surprise.
Our new Ampere filly is finally here!

March 6, 2013

It has been a very long year for us waiting to see the sequel to our magnificent 2011 colt Amadeus by Ampere out of our outstanding mare Preference.  This is Izarra!  She kept us waiting, arriving fashionably late, 5 days past her due date but she did not disappoint us!  This filly is truly elegant and with all that chrome, she is every bit as striking as her older brother.
Our first 2013 foal is here.  Meet FF Querida!

FF Querida, 1 day old.
February 5, 2013

FF Querida is by Cunningham, out of Quinoa, by Quaterback.  She was born February 4.  This filly is very correct, tall and friendly.  She has very uphill gaits with a big engine.  No doubt her jumper heritage is showing.  It appears she may be a gray like her sire when she matures.  FF Querida will be offered for sale, so watch for her page soon.
September 14, 2012

Despite the mud generated by the absolute downpour of heavy rain yesterday and all last night, things could not possibly have gone better today for us at the Mare Performance Testing and Mare and Foal Inspections! Thank goodness for tents and our covered arena!

Saraya (Sarkozy x Donnabelle by Donnerhall) took top honors in the Mare Performance Testing with an overall score of 8.0 and a Special Premium Mare designation. She also received her Mare Approval in the Main Mare Book.

Olivia (Don Kennedy x Ornella by Argentinus) took second overall with score of 7.5 and won the jumping portion of the testing, also being designated Verbands Premium Mare.

Xanadu (Araconit x Felicitas by For Pleasure) tied for third place with a 7.0 overall score. She also received her Mare Approval in the Main Mare Book.

Our 2012 filly Teance, (Grafenstolz x Tirana by French Kiss) got a Premium designation and was registered in the Main Mare Book.

Donnabelle (by Donnerhall) is having a filly!  We are very excited to have this Zonik filly coming next Spring.  Zonik (by Blue Hors Zack) is a very exciting young stallion which should produce an excellent foal with an incredible mare like Donnabelle.

Donnabelle

Teance went outside today for the first time.  She had a wonderful time running around and learning to control those VERY long legs.  It is so much fun to watch her!

Tirana is such a wonderful mother!  She absolutely adores her baby.

She is here!!!

May 25, 2012

Welcome Teance!  Tirana, by French Kiss, foaled today at 1:46 AM.  This new filly by Grafenstolz is a "Mini-Me" version of her beautiful dam.  She has the same sweet disposition and personality.  I am in love!

May 17, 2012

Olivia is pregnant!  We will definitely be quite busy next Spring!  So far I have 5 mares confirmed in foal, 1 due to be checked next week and 1 that will be bred this weekend.  The newest mare, Lalique will be bred in Houston, so I do not exactly when that will happen.

We have confirmed so far:

Quinoa (by Quaterback) in foal to Cunningham -fetal sexing says this will be a filly
Saraya (by Sarkozy) in foal to French Kiss
Olivia (by Don Kennedy) in foal to Furstenball
Preference (by Jonggors Weyden) in foal to Ampere
Donnabelle (by Donnerhall) in foal to Zonik

Still pending:

Wynona (by Cacique) was bred to Eurocommerce Berlin
Xanadu (by Araconit) will be bred to Eurocommerce Berlin
Lalique (by Campesino) will be bred to Cunningham.

Tirana (by French Kiss) is now at day 323.  She was almost 2 weeks early last time, so she could foal any day now.  This foal will be a filly by Grafenstolz.

Xanadu
May 16, 2012

We have had a very busy week here at the farm.  I have bred Wynona to Eurocommerce Berlin, confirmed Olivia in foal to Furstenball and I bought two new mares, Xanadu (Oldenburg) and Lalique (Holsteiner).  We are very excited about these two new additions to our broodmares.  Xanadu has already arrived at the farm and will be bred to Eurocommerce Berlin or Calido next week.  Lalique will not get here until her foal is weaned in about 5 months, but we are having her bred to either Calido or Cunningham for a 2013 foal.

Foal watch continues for Tirana, now at Day 322.  We are looking forward to seeing her new Grafenstolz filly.
May 7, 2012

Our banner breeding season continues!  Donnabelle has now been confirmed in foal to Zonik.  This should be a really exciting foal!

We did a fetal sexing check this weekend.  Our first foal of 2013 will be a filly by Cunningham, out of Quinoa!  It was so fun to see the little one on the ultrasound screen because we could see her face with the mouth, nostrils and eye sockets easily discernible.  She appeared to be smiling!  We watched her move her legs around and move her head back and forth.  I would love to have had a 3D ultrasound machine to improve the picture even more, but I doubt I will be able to convince my husband that it is a necessity.  I was totally fascinated the whole time.

Tirana is getting closer and closer to her due date.  As of today she is 314 days pregnant and truly looks it now.  Her udder is filling and she moves fairly slowly, often grunting when her soon to be born filly lands a kick to her insides.  I know she must be as anxious as we are for her new daughters arrival.  I will post photos as soon as the big day comes.

Happy Birthday Gustaf!
May 6, 2012

Today is Gustaf's birthday.  He is one year old.  In some ways it is hard to believe it has been a year already, but I cannot imagine what life would be like without him now.

For those who do not know who Gustaf is, he is the little White Tail fawn my husband found abandoned on our property last year during our terrible drought.  I bottle raised him and he truly believes he is a dog.  He hangs out with my dogs, comes to the barn every day, sleeps on a dog bed in my office and is neutered and housebroken.  We truly love him.
April 12, 2012

Breeding is going incredibly well this year for us!  So far we have a 100% pregnancy success rate using one dose of frozen semen for the mares we have bred.  What a change from the past few years!  This is particularly exciting because this is the first season we have done all of the scanning and breeding totally in house! I love doing the scanning and the breeding, but a little more sleep would definitely be desirable.  It is quite a thrill to see that little black spot appear on the ultrasound screen.

Quinoa was first, bred to Cunningham.  We just saw the very strong heartbeat of her 30 day old fetus today.  Next was Olivia, bred to Status Quo,  confirmed in foal, but sadly she subsequently lost the pregnancy.  Preference has been confirmed in foal to Ampere again this year.  Saraya was just confirmed in foal to French Kiss.  Olivia was bred yesterday to Furstenball, now we wait.  This weekend we will be breeding Wynona to Eurocommerce Berlin and Donnabelle to Zonik.

I am told it is quite unusual, but Quinoa, Olivia and Preference each had twins!  Olivia has just double ovulated again, so we may just have a fourth set of twins to deal with.  Saraya is the only one so far to produce a single embryo!  I am not quite yet comfortable with pinching an embryo, so Dr. Benjamin Espy has come to do that part for me.

It is the first breeding season for my new staff members Ali Mills and Maurissa Love.  They are tremendously helpful and thoroughly enjoy all of the aspects of the job they do.  I do not know what I would do without them!
